Prior to 1999, MOGAS defined large valves as 10 inch and above. By 2007, 15% of MOGAS valves being manufactured were 14 inch and larger. Since then, MOGAS has redefined large valves as 24 to 40 inch (previously 10 to 18 inch). Over 15 years, from 2007 to 2021, manufacturing these larger valves sizes have increased by more than 6%.

In this instance, manual mate lapping is used to assure the best possible mating seal between a seat and the entire hemisphere it seals against in the closed position. Four technicians are required due to the high forces transferred to the seat by friction with the rotating ball.
